According to a study conducted by Ontario's Ministry of Health, "...for the management of low-back pain, chiropractic care is the most effective treatment. Injured workers diagnosed with low-back pain returned to work much sooner when treated by chiropractors than by physicians."

Comparing Treatments

Chiropractic Treatment or Outpatient Management for Low Back Pain

In this randomised comparison study over a three-year period,  British medical researchers found chiropractic treatment significantly more effective than hospital outpatient treatment, especially in patients with chronic and severe back pain. Those treated by chiropractic gained more benefit and long term satisfaction than those treated by hospitals.

Chiropractic Treatment or Physiotherapy

A randomised comparison of four treatments by Dutch medical researchers on patients who suffered from persistent back and neck pain found that spinal manipulation provided greater improvement of symptoms compared with physical therapy. The patients receiving spinal manipulation had better physical function and less pain at 12 months than those assigned to physiotherapy.

Chiropractic Treatment or Bed Rest

A study published in a Medical Journal followed a group of 152 patients suffering from acute low back pain who were treated either by spinal manipulation or bed rest.  After 1 week, 50% of the individuals in the spinal manipulation group were symptom free compared with 27% of those receiving bed rest only.

Chiropractic Treatment or Deep Heat Applications

A study published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine found that patients suffering from a prolapsed intervertebral disc who received spinal manipulation showed significantly better post-treatment range of motion and a shorter time to pain relief than those receiving deep heat applications. “It was concluded that manipulation therapy as shown by this study is superior to the conventional method.”

Creating a healthier lifestyle doesn’t have to mean drastic changes. In fact, drastic changes almost always lead to failure. Making small changes in how you live each day can lead to a healthier lifestyle. Here are some healthy lifestyle tips you can incorporate into your daily life...

Healthy Lifestyle Tips

Move Well - Exercise on a daily basis, sit less, move more and gradually build up to at least 30 minutes of exercise a day.

Eat Well – Increase your intake of natural foods, like fruits, vegetables and non-processed foods. A good simple rule is, the closer to its natural form - the better the food. A healthy diet can help with weight management and improve health and quality of life.

Sleep Well – Try and sleep 7 to 8 hours per day.  Lack of sleep can make you feel tired and affect your eating habits.

Drink Well – Drink 8 – 10 glasses of water a day, avoid fizzy drinks, and drinks that de-hydrate the body, like coffee, and reduce your intake of alcohol.

Think Well – Have a positive outlook.  People who are positive tend to have better health and success in life than those negative thinkers.  Become a ‘glass-half-full’ person!

Love Well – Giving your partner a hug can not only warm your heart but protect it too.  A study by the University of North Carolina in 2005 found that hugging your partner for 20 seconds could lower blood pressure and reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Choose Well – Choose happiness and health. You have to choose to live your life in some way, and it's just as easy to be happy, than the alternatives (and it's a lot more fun!)

Laugh Well – Find something to laugh at each day, as laughter releases endorphins, boosts your immune system, increases blood flow and relaxes your body.

Live Well – Maintain a balanced lifestyle.  There should be a balance between your work time and your leisure time. Be present and conscious while performing each role, as there is no use having leisure time if you are constantly thinking about work.

Spinal Awareness Week

Spinal Awareness Week is a national initiative and is held every May. The theme for this year’s Spinal Awareness Week 11th – 15th May is: ‘Move Better-Live Better’

Spinal Awareness Week plans to educate and encourage people to introduce changes to their lifestyle that will allow them to Move Better and ultimately Live Better. Chiropractors acknowledge that the elderly population in the UK is increasing and through Chiropractic care and advice can not only improve the independence and quality of life of the elderly but also reduce the financial burden on an already stretched NHS. Chiropractors have much to offer this rapidly expanding demographic group, not the least of which is maintenance of spinal flexibility, improving posture and balance.

One of the leading causes of death in the elderly is falling, nearly one in three elderly adults falls every year with approximately 35% being hospitalised as a direct result of their fall. These tragedies could be prevented through proper postural corrections that have shown to improve balance.

Our objective is to ‘Make Health Last’ and, through chiropractic adjustments, exercise and diet advice, chiropractors can have a huge effect on the health of not just our ageing population, but everyone.
